Sony finally launched its long awaited tablet pc. It surprised fans not just with the unveiling of the long rumored Sony S1 tablet (officially Sony Tablet S) but also unveiled another Android tablet – the Sony Tablet P (a.k.a. Sony Tablet S2)
CPU, OS, Memory
Same with the Sony Tablet S, the Sony P tablet also joined the list of Android Honeycomb tablets. It runs the Android Honeycomb version 3.1 and can be upgraded to version 3.2. It has a 1GHz dual core CPU (ARM Cortex-A9 processor), 1GB or RAM, and built in 4GB of storage. A 2GB microSD card comes with the package but you can always opt to replace it with higher capacity memory card (supports up to 32GB)
|OS||Android 3.1 Honeycomb|
|CPU||1GHz dual core|
|Memory||1GB RAM, 4GB Internal|
|Screen||5.5-inch TFT capacitive touch screens1024x480 pixels|
|Dimensions||(180) x (158) x (14) mm – Slate mode(180) x (79) x (28) mm – folded|
|Cameras||5-Megapixel Primary0.3-Megapixel Secondary|
The Sony Tablet P might not look the typical slate tablet at first glance as it is has two screens that fold together – it looks elegant though when folded. The two screens are 5.5-inch capacitive touch screen each. For some applications, the display might look odd as it is divided by the hinge but surely advantageous for apps with virtual keyboard. The folding screens make the tablet portable and add protection for the screen.
The tablet has front and rear cameras installed. MicroUSB slot and the memory card slot can b found on the side of the device.
Models and Competitors
Like the Apple counterpart, the iPad 2, the Sony Tablet P will be available on Wifi only and 3G models.
The current market dominator, the iPad 2, will be the Sony Tablet P’s toughest rival along with other Android tablets like the Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab. Another mainstream tablet, the Blackberry Playbook, is also a keen competitor.
Availability, Release Date, Price
The Sony Tablet P has been unveiled in the Recent IFA event (September 2011). It will be officially available for purchase on the fourth quarter of the same year (November 2011).
The unit will be sold at £499.
